Q.  What type of soil should I use in the Composting Garden?

It is up to you, we recommend high quality planting soil.  In theory the composting garden is like a large planter pot, so it would be best to use a soil designed for potted plants.

Q.  How much soil will the composting garden hold?

With the center compost bin inserted in the bin and filled to 23″ would require 21 cf. of soil.  If you only filled it to 22 inches, then that would require 21cf.

Q.  To save money on soil, can I use my existing soil?

Yes, as long is it is good quality soil, and you fortify it with other nutrients.  Keep in mind if you use your existing soil you may not get the water holding and drainage qualities of potting soil.  You will also be spending more time weeding because you are bring any seeds that are lying dormant with you.

Q.  Can I use some of my soil and top it with good potting soil?

Yes, If you used filled the composting garden with 12″ of your old soil, then topped it off to 22 inches with high quality potting soil, then that would only require about 9.5 cf. of the better quality potting soil.

Q.  How much planting area will the Composting Garden provide?

If you are just counting the dirt surface area it would be 11.57 sf. of planting space.

Q.  What tools do I need to install the Composting Garden?

All you will need is a shovel to move your supplied soil into the fabric pot.
